Dry Composting Latrines
Since before the outbreak of Cholera in Haiti in late 2010 but with an increased vigor and sense of urgency, KONPAY has been pursuing sanitation projects within several communities. To date there exist three competed models of dry composting latrines.
These latrines are unlike conventional pit latrines. They sit above ground on a foundation solid enough to prevent contamination of ground water. The foundation contains a total of four catchment units, two for each stall. Each stall in turn sits above two catchments with one being in use at any given time, and the other being sealed.
Once a catchment unit has filled to capacity, the full unit is sealed off and let to decompose through natural biological processes that will, over an estimated 12 month period, yield fertilizer for non-produce bearing plots and programs such as tree nurseries. The other unit is switched in and the process repeats itself.
Utilization of the latrine is delicate and must follow a specific set of instructions. This includes proper use so that the built-in separator for solids and liquids can perform, as well as routine application of ashes and/or saw dust to prevent odor and to speed up the underlying biological processes.
The fertilizer won from these latrines can be used and/or sold to the economic benefit of the community while the latrine itself greatly improves health & sanitation.
