Sustainable Agriculture
Agricultural and environmental health is a necessary component for sustainable development in all areas of life. Konpay believes in the right to empower the community through programs that emphasize the community's role in combating the devastating effects of deforestation and developing local markets.
Haiti is rich in agricultural resources and has more than enough potential to feed itself. The Framer to Farmer Exchange Program, envisioned between farming communities in the United States and here in Haiti, will become a program helping farmers share knowledge, access seed banks that prioritize Haitian seeds, and focus on distribution of locally grown food.
Educating the local farming community and willing youth community leaders of JDS, KONPAY's sustainable organic agriculture program provides hands-on learning opportunities to disseminate best practices, teaches composting and other techniques, and reduces the reliance on imported, expensive and genetically modified seeds and the associated chemical inputs.
At Habitat by the Sea, a learning garden exists where workshops are given and where delicious varieties of vegetables, fruit and herbs grow in an area of 14 twenty-foot beds. This garden itself was also made possible in part by our nascent Farmer to Farmer Progam, which brought knowledge, seeds and labor from CDi - Community Development International and New Earth Farm in Virginia to Haiti.
